M&E (Media and Entertainment) – 2023 Business Trends in Streaming and Video Industry…

by Vamsi Chemitiganti

Netflix just released its third quarter 2023 results. In a blockbuster quarter, it added about 8.8 million net new paid subscribers during the last 3 months. That is the highest number added in a single quarter since early 2020 when interest in TV streaming exploded during the pandemic lockdowns. This number was also 45% higher than what analysts had expected for subscriber additions. The company said it expects a similar jump in the fourth quarter, which would come in ahead of the 7.7 million analysts had predicted, making this blog very topical.

The streaming media industry constantly evolves, and 2022/23 were no exception. Here is a quick note on my view of the top 10 trends. Post Covid, the streaming industry has reshaped how we consume content. In 2023, the streaming landscape continues to incorporate technological advancements, changing consumer preferences, and innovative content creation. Let’s examine the exciting developments, challenges, and future prospects that will change the digital streaming landscape.

Key Business Trends in Streaming and VOD (Video on demand)

Here are some of the key trends that emerged in the industry last year:

  1. Continued growth of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services: SVOD services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ continued to grow in popularity in 2023, with more and more people subscribing to multiple services. This trend is being driven by a number of factors, including the convenience of streaming, the wide variety of content available, and the relatively affordable cost of subscriptions.
  2. Rise of ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services: AVOD services like Hulu, Peacock, and Tubi offer free content with limited commercial interruptions. These services have become increasingly popular in recent years, as they offer a way to watch popular TV shows and movies without having to pay a subscription fee.
  3. Growth of live streaming: Live streaming services like Twitch and YouTube Live have also become more popular in recent years. These services allow users to watch live events such as video games, concerts, and sporting events. Live streaming has also become a popular way for creators to interact with their fans in real time.
  4. Diversification of content: Streaming services are increasingly offering a wider variety of content, including international programming, documentaries, and original content. This is being driven by the desire to attract new subscribers and to compete with other streaming services.
  5. Investment in new technologies: Streaming services are also investing in new technologies, such as high dynamic range (HDR) and Dolby Atmos sound. These technologies offer a more immersive viewing experience, and they are becoming increasingly popular as consumers upgrade their home entertainment systems.

What are the New Ways in Which Viewers Are Using These Services

Here are some additional trends that are worth noting and ones that will play out more and more in times to come:

  1. The rise of mobile viewing: More and more people are watching streaming content on their mobile devices. Streaming services are optimizing their platforms for mobile viewing, and they are also developing new features for mobile users, such as the ability to download content for offline viewing.
  2. The importance of personalization: Streaming services are using data and algorithms to personalize the viewing experience for each user. This includes recommending new content to users, and making it easy for users to find the content they want to watch.
  3. The emergence of new players: New streaming services are emerging all the time, and they are challenging the established players in the market. These new services are offering unique content and features, and they are attracting new subscribers.

Conclusion

Overall, the streaming media industry is booming, and I expect to continue to grow in the coming years. The trends discussed above are just a few of the factors that are shaping the industry. As technology continues to evolve, and as consumers continue to change their viewing habits, we can expect to see even more innovation and disruption in the streaming media industry in the years to come. The next blog will discuss how technology trends continue to impact this exciting industry.
